Patient Privacy Policy
The University of Northern Colorado College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNC COM) is committed to maintaining the highest standards of patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and applicable state and federal laws. Students are required to protect the confidentiality of all patient information encountered during their education and clinical training.
Students may access patient medical records only when they are members of the patient’s care team or when access is approved for research purposes. Posting or discussing patient information on social media or in any public forum is prohibited even when identifying details are removed.
All students are required to complete annual HIPAA training. Alleged violations of patient privacy are referred to the UNC COM Professionalism Committee. Students found to have violated patient confidentiality may be subject to disciplinary action up to and including notation on the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) or dismissal from the College.
