Chinese

Program Overview

College of Humanities and Social Sciences

The Chinese Minor offers students a comprehensive introduction to Chinese culture and civilization, while developing intermediate proficiency in both spoken and written Mandarin. Students begin by learning foundational language structures, and progress through courses that enhance their understanding and mastery of Chinese grammar and vocabulary, and explore diverse topics relevant to the Chinese-speaking world. At the advanced level, we explore the language, literature, and history of China, and the critical social and political issues facing Chinese communities today. Additionally, we explore career opportunities that leverage Chinese langauge skills. Upon completion, students will be well-equipped for work, travel, or further academic pursuits in Chinese studies.

Students with prior learning in Chinese may earn retroactive credit for language classes through demonstration of proficiency and earning a minimum “B” or better in their first language class taken at UNC.

Variable topic courses may be taken for credit toward the Chinese Minor only when approved for credit by the student’s faculty advisor in Chinese.

Courses with CHIN prefix are conducted in Chinese unless otherwise noted in course descriptions.

Students are encouraged to enrich their Chinese language-related cultural awareness through regular participation in program-sponsored activities. Consult department advisor. Student must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.5 in those courses that count toward the minor and that are taken at UNC.

Advising with a faculty advisor for the Chinese minor is suggested before registration.

In accordance with University Policies, coursework earned more than 10 years prior to the date of matriculation to UNC may not be used to satisfy any major or minor requirements. Any exception to this policy is at the discretion of the academic program.
