The program consists of three parts:

1. Liberal Arts Core (LAC) Credits
2. Required Major Credits
3. University-Wide Credits

Program Description:

A Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology with an emphasis in Applied Sociology includes an examination of basic theories and methods in sociology and the application of sociological knowledge to a specific concentration. The applied research practicum experience with a social agency or organization is the capstone course.

Graduates will be prepared for employment in a variety of social and private agencies, social research, and related areas.

Additional Program Requirements

• A 2.0 GPA within the major is required.
• At least 50 percent of the courses taken to complete the major must be upper division, 300-400 level.
• All emphasis areas provide a foundation for graduate work in sociology.
• Students may select only ONE emphasis area.
• Juniors and seniors with a University GPA of 3.0 and higher may register for 500 level courses.

Choose 12 credits based on the criteria below:

• Only 3 credits of SOC 422, or SOC 490, or SOC 491 or SOC 492 may be used to satisfy these elective credits.
• A maximum of three different variable title courses (SOC 302 and SOC 395) may be counted as required electives.

Required Concentration

Take 9 credits

• Select 9 credits within a concentration area such as childhood and youth, health, illness and aging, social psychology, or social policy.
• Please check with a Sociology program advisor for a current list of concentration areas and courses within each.

3. University-Wide Credits — 39 credits

Complete additional credits to achieve the minimum credits needed for this degree at UNC; for this degree, that will typically be 39 credits.
