The program consists of three parts:
- Liberal Arts Curriculum (LAC) Credits
- Required Major Credits
- University-Wide Credits
Program Description:
A major in Theatre Arts provides pre-professional training for students who have professional theatre employment as their career goal. The program cultivates an appreciation and understanding of theatre as part of American society and culture.
Admission to the Theatre Arts degree program with concentration areas of acting, design technology and theatre studies is by audition, interview, or essay.
The School of Theatre Arts requires student majors to consult with and be advised by a faculty member teaching in the program.
Program Admission Requirements:
- The student must apply and be accepted to one of the concentration areas. The student must then complete all of the required courses in the concentration area prior to achieving the Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts degree.

Degree Requirements — 120 Credits
1. Liberal Arts Curriculum — 31 credits
To complete the degree in 120 credits as outlined, the program recommends the below LAC courses that also count toward the required major credits.
Any additional LAC coursework completed outside of the recommended list below may extend the length of the program of study.
Written Communication — 6 credits

Arts & Humanities, History, Social & Behavioral Sciences, U.S. Multicultural Studies, and International Studies — 15 credits
To complete the LAC in the minimum number of credits, be sure to choose at least one course with an IS designation and one course with an MS designation.
THEA 296 (3) and THEA 297 (3) are recommended to fulfill Arts & Humanities requirement and will fulfill both LAC and major requirements. *Design Technology concentration students: Take THEA 296 or THEA 297.

2. Required Major — 54-86 credits

2a. Required Major: Acting Concentration — 70 credits
In addition to all School and Program requirements, students must adhere to the following guidelines in order to persist within Acting concentration area:
Acting concentration students must audition for all mainstage plays (non-musicals) during the academic year unless they receive an exemption in advance of auditions from the Area Head. In the event of a vacancy in the Area Head position, an exemption from auditions must be granted by the School Director. Requests to be exempted from auditions will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Acting concentration students must accept any role they are offered in a mainstage production during the academic year. If a student does not wish to be considered for a particular production, permission must be granted ahead of time (see above.)
- The Colorado Commission on Higher Education and this program requires the completion of a yearly assessment process. The assessment, which includes an evaluation of the student’s progress as well as a yearly assessment, may be the basis of your continuance in this program area.
- Non-compliance of any of the above requirements may result in disciplinary actions including, but not limited to, removal from future production assignments, loss of talent scholarship funding, or expulsion from the degree program.
Take all of the following for 60 credits:

2b. Required Major: Theatre Studies Concentration — 54 credits
In addition to all School and Program requirements, students must adhere to the following guidelines in order to persist within the Theatre Studies concentration area:
- The Colorado Commission on Higher Education and this program requires the completion of a yearly assessment process. The assessment, which includes an evaluation of your year’s progress as well as a yearly audition or interview, may be the basis of your continuance in this program area.
Non-compliance of any of the above requirements may result in disciplinary actions including, but not limited to, removal from future production assignments, loss of talent scholarship funding, or expulsion from the program.
Take all of the following courses for 38 credits:

2c. Required Major: Design Technology Concentration — 86 credits
In addition to all School and Program requirements, students must adhere to the following guidelines in order to persist within the Design Technology concentration area:
- The Colorado Commission on Higher Education and this program requires the completion of a yearly assessment process. The assessment, which includes an evaluation of the student’s progress as well as a yearly assessment, may be the basis of your continuance in this program area.
Non-compliance of any of the above requirements may result in disciplinary actions including, but not limited to, removal from future production assignments, loss of talent scholarship funding, or expulsion from the program.

3. University-Wide Credits — 3-35 credits*
Complete additional credits to achieve the minimum credits needed for this degree at UNC; for this degree that will typically be 3-35 credits depending on concentration chosen.
- Acting Emphasis: 19-25 University-Wide Credits needed to complete the degree (120 credits).
- Theatre Studies: 35-41 University-Wide Credits needed to complete the degree (120 credits).
- Design Technology: 3-6 University-Wide Credits needed to complete the degree (120 credits).
*Note: Students who apply the recommended courses to both the liberal arts curriculum and the major requirements will have an increased number of university wide electives to apply to this degree. See your advisor for details.
