Program Overview
College of Education and Behavioral Sciences
The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Graduate Certificate is a 13 credit program designed to provide preparation to those interested in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in international settings, or teaching English as Second Language (ESL) in non K-12 (adult education) domestic settings. Participants will take five courses, with an experiential component, organized to prepare students at the graduate level for teaching in settings where disposition and skills are needed to work with diverse populations in a rapidly changing world. The program is not associated with any K-12 teaching license.

General Graduate Certificate Admission Requirements
Program Requirements
For admittance to the certificate program, students should be successfully admitted to the University as a degree or non-degree seeking graduate student, including:
- An earned Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution;
- GPA of 3.00 or better, on a 4.00 point scale, from the most recent degree earned or current degree in progress;
- International applicants must submit one of the following qualifying English proficiency scores: TOEFL 80; IELTS 6.5 to meet the English proficiency requirements established by the Graduate School and International Admissions.
Prerequisite: Enrollment as a degree or non-degree seeking graduate student at UNC.

Program Note
A "B-" grade or above in each of the courses and an overall GPA of 3.00 or above must be achieved to earn the TESOL Certificate.
