Program Overview

The Military Science minor is linked to the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program and provides professional education and leadership training to students who desire to serve our country as officers in the U.S. Army upon graduation. MLSC courses at the 100 and 200 level are open to all students. 300 and 400 level MLSC courses are restricted to contracted cadets (only contracted cadets can complete the military science academic minor). Successful completion of the full ROTC program qualifies cadets for both a commission as a second lieutenant in the Army and an opportunity to serve at least four years on active duty or at least six years in the reserve component (Army Reserve or Army National Guard).

Minor Requirements — 21 Credits

Students must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 21 total credit hours offered for the minor. The minor requires 12 or more upper-division (300- to 400-level) credits.

To receive the minor in Military Science, students must commission as Second Lieutenants in the US Army upon graduation from UNC.

Additional coursework may be required due to prerequisites.

Complete at least 2 credits of introductory Military Leadership Courses and/or labs from the following two lists:

100- and 200-level labs are optional for the Military Science Minor, but are highly encouraged. Labs are normally held in Fort Collins at the Colorado State University Campus.

Credit may be awarded for prior military service.

MLSC 235 requires attendance at the five-week basic camp and can be applied toward lower division credits.

MLSC 386 requires attendance at the six-week Army ROTC Advanced Camp. Registration for MLSC 386 is not required unless these credits are needed to satisfy requirements for a minor in Military Science. When needed, MLSC 386 is normally completed between a student’s junior and senior years.

300- and 400-level labs are restricted to and required for contracted cadets.

Upper Division MLSC courses and labs are held in Fort Collins at Colorado State University campus.

Choose up to 6 additional MLSC coursework to bring the total number of credits to 21.

Additional coursework, if needed, should be selected with the guidance of an Army ROTC advisor.
