Credit by Examination: ACE, AP and IB, CLEP, Challenge, MBA High School of Business, Foreign Language Proficiency

ACE Credit

Students may qualify for University credit based on course equivalency recommendations from the American Council of Education. A maximum of 30 credit hours can be applied towards graduation. Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB)

A student may qualify for University credit or may be exempt from a specific course by demonstrating superior performance on the subject matter. Examinations are administered through the AP program of the Educational Testing Service. These are usually taken when the student is still in high school. Generally, an AP test score of 3, 4, or 5 will result in college credit being awarded. An IB test score of 4 or 5 may result in college credit being awarded. AP and IB credit is counted as non-residency transfer work. Please consult the Office of the Registrar for specific AP and IB test score requirements. http://www.unco.edu/registrar/transfer/

The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

CLEP offers another opportunity to earn credit through demonstration of superior performance in subject matter examinations. CLEP credit is offered for certain courses. A maximum of 30 credit hours can be applied towards graduation. CLEP credit is counted as non-residency transfer work. Challenge and Proficiency Exams

Students who judge their current academic ability in a specific course to be sufficiently high may take rigorous subject matter examinations to earn credit. Students interested in challenging a UNC course should contact the appropriate school or program to determine the availability of a challenge and/or proficiency examination. Challenge and/or proficiency exam credit is counted as UNC residency work.

Academic units must submit the Credit for Prior Learning Options form to the Office of the Registrar to assure the awarding of academic credit for a student. List of all Guaranteed Transfer Pathway (GTP) Challenge and Proficiency Options.

Per §23-1-125(4), Colorado Revised Statute, “…each public institution of higher education shall grant full course credits to students for the core [GT Pathways] courses they successfully test out of, free of tuition for those courses.” Each public institution shall define a process for students to test out of GT Pathways courses, “…including specifying use of a national test or the criteria for approving institutionally devised tests.” If the student transfers, receiving institutions shall apply that credit to the appropriate GT Pathways category, even if the test out exam used was not one used by the receiving institution (CLEP, for example).

MBA High School of Business

Students who complete all six (6) required courses in the MBA High School of Businesstm and received a B or better in their coursework may request credit for completing the MBA High School of Businesstm program.  The courses required within the MBA High School of Businesstm are: Principles of Business, Business Economics, Principles of Marketing, Principles of Finance, Principles of Management and Business Strategies.  This awarded credit will, in effect, grant the student 3 credit hours of BA 150 Foundations of Business Thought (Liberal Arts Curriculum- Arts & Humanities). To request the credit, please submit a legible copy of your MBA High School of Businesstm Certificate of Completion along with a high school transcript indicating the MBA High School of Businesstm  courses with grades of B or better to the Office of the Registrar. Students are not required to be business majors to be eligible to apply for the credit.

Colorado Diploma Endorsement for Biliteracy and State/District Seals of Biliteracy:

Students who have earned the Colorado Diploma Endorsement for Biliteracy or a State/District Seal of Biliteracy will be awarded credit if their language proficiency was determined through one of the following tests: AP, ASLPI, CLEP, or IB. Students may earn credits in ASL (American Sign Language), Chinese, French, German, Japanese, or Spanish as described in the ASLIS (American Sign Language and Interpreting Studies) Department policy on the ASLPI (American Sign Language Proficiency Interview). Prior Learning Credit in World Languages and Cultures

The World Languages and Cultures Department uses placement examinations in Chinese, French, German, and Spanish to establish advanced placement in language classes. Students in Japanese should contact the Department of World Languages and Cultures for placement. A student may receive prior learning credits provided a grade of “B” (3.0) or higher is earned in the student’s first UNC course above the 101 level in a particular language (Chinese, French, German, Japanese and Spanish).

Students must petition the Office of the Registrar after receiving a ‘B’ or higher grade in order to be awarded the prior learning credits. 

Petition forms are available in the World Languages and Cultures office. Prior learning language credit is counted as in‐residence work. Prior learning credit may be earned in one or more languages, as follows:

  • Elementary Language II (102) courses earn 5 prior learning credits plus 5 course credits for a total of 10 credits.
  • Intermediate Language I (201) courses earn 10 prior learning credits plus 3 (CHIN, JAPN, SPAN) or 4 (FR, GER) course credits for a total of 13 or 14 credits.
  • Intermediate Language II (202) courses earn 13 or 14 prior learning credits plus 3 (CHIN, JAPN, SPAN) or 4 (FR, GER) course credits for a total of 16 or 18 credits.
  • The elementary Spanish courses SPAN 103 and SPAN 104 are not eligible for prior learning credits.

Any advanced language course (300 and above) earns 16 (CHIN, JAPN, SPAN) or 18 (FR, GER) prior learning credits plus 3 course credits for a total of 19 or 21 credits.

Students whose first UNC language course is a 300 or 400-level course that is not listed in the preceding table may petition the appropriate department for prior learning credits. Alternatively, they can apply for prior learning credits after they have completed a course that appears in the preceding table.

Prior Learning Credit in American Sign Language and Interpreting Studies Courses

A student wanting advancement placement in American Sign Language courses above ASL 101 must meet with a faculty member in the American Sign Language and Interpreting Studies (ASLIS) department for a placement screening. A student may receive prior learning credits, provided a grade of “B” (3.0) or higher is earned in the student’s first UNC course taken above ASL 101.

After receiving a “B” or higher grade students must petition the Office of the Registrar in order to be awarded the prior learning credits. Petition forms are available in the ASLIS office.

Prior Learning credit may be earned in American Sign Language courses as follows:

  • The ASL 102 (ASL II) courses earn 3 prior learning credits plus 3 course credits for a total of 6 credits.
  • The ASL 201 (ASL III) courses earn 6 prior learning credits plus 3 course credits for a total of 9 credits.
  • The ASL 202 (ASL IV) courses earn 9 prior learning credits plus 3 course credits for a total of 12 credits.
  • The INTR 101 (ASL V) courses earn 12 prior learning credits plus 3 course credits for a total of 15 credits.
  • The INTR 102 (ASL VI) courses earn 15 prior learning credits plus 3 course credits for a total of 18 credits.
