Written Comprehensive Examinations for MA

Each master's degree student must pass a written comprehensive examination to show

competency in the discipline at the master’s degree level, which will be demonstrated by successfully completing a written portfolio document. A student's portfolio can be submitted for review to the program faculty after the student has completed or is currently enrolled in a majority of the required coursework toward the degree. The portfolio document must include the integration of science and practice to demonstrate program learning outcomes have been achieved based on the seven competencies expected of students once they complete the Master’s in Health Service Psychology en route to the Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology. These seven competencies include research skills, adherence to ethical and legal standards, understanding of individual and cultural diversity, demonstration of professional values and attitudes, effective communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to conduct assessments and interventions. The portfolio will be evaluated using a faculty-designed rubric assessing all seven areas.

The student’s performance on the written examination will be evaluated as: (a) pass; (b) may pass when conditions are met; or (c) fail, retake permitted; or (d) fail, retake not permitted, program terminated. To pass comprehensive exams, the student must demonstrate competency in all seven APA areas at the minimum level of achievement (MLA). The MLA for students completing the HSP MA is a 2 in all seven areas; Professional Values and Communication & Interpersonal Skills must be a 3 or higher. See Graduate School policy related to comprehensive exams for master’s degree students.
