College of Osteopathic Medicine Catalog 2026-2027

COMLEX-USA

Overview

Students enrolled in the University of Northern Colorado College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNC COM) are required to pass COMLEX-USA Level 1 and COMLEX-USA Level 2-CE to earn the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree. These examinations verify academic readiness, clinical competence and professional standing required for progression through the curriculum and graduation.

Eligibility & Timing

COMLEX-USA Level 1
Students are eligible to take COMLEX-USA Level 1 after successful completion of all OMS I and OMS II coursework and receipt of dean attestation. Level 1 must be taken prior to the start of OMS III courses or clinical rotations and by the deadline established by UNC COM administration.

COMLEX-USA Level 2-CE
Students are eligible to take COMLEX-USA Level 2-CE after successful completion of all OMS III clinical rotations and receipt of dean attestation. Level 2-CE must be taken prior to the start of OMS IV rotations and by the administrative deadline.

Examination Failure

Following a COMLEX-USA examination failure, a student may complete their current clinical rotation but will be removed from the subsequent rotation. The student must meet with the Student Success Committee to develop a structured study plan and access appropriate academic resources.

The student’s academic record will also be reviewed by the Student Progress Committee (SPC), which will determine permission and timing for a retake as well as the student’s academic standing.

Dismissal Thresholds

Dismissal may be considered under the following circumstances:

  • Failure of the same COMLEX-USA examination level more than once
  • Accumulation of three COMLEX-USA examination failures in any combination
