Professionalism Standards and Lapses in Professional Behavior

Students enrolled in the University of Northern Colorado College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNC COM) are expected to uphold the highest standards of professional conduct. As members of the osteopathic medical profession and the University community, students are expected to demonstrate integrity, responsibility, altruism, empathy, trustworthiness and excellence in patient care. These values form the foundation of the UNC COM Code of Ethics and are essential to maintaining patient trust and professional accountability.

Unprofessional behavior includes but is not limited to academic dishonesty, falsification or misrepresentation, breaches of patient confidentiality, invasion of privacy, criminal activity, harassment of any kind including verbal, physical, psychological or sexual misconduct and the use of offensive or derogatory language when referring to patients or colleagues.

Alleged lapses in professionalism are referred to the UNC COM Professionalism Committee for review. Students found to have engaged in unprofessional behavior may be subject to disciplinary action up to and including notation on the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) or dismissal from the College.
