The program consists of three parts:

1. Liberal Arts Core (LAC) Credits
2. Required Major Credits
3. University-Wide Credits

Program Description:

A Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology with an emphasis in social issues combines basic principles, theories and methods and applies them to an understanding of social relations, institutional arrangements, and social activitism. The curriculum includes an examination of major issues in sociology.

Graduates will be prepared for knowledgeable and productive citizenship roles as well as employment by social agencies and related institutions.

Program Requirements

• A 2.0 GPA within the major is required.
• At least 50 percent of the courses taken to complete the major must be upper division, 300-400 level.
• All emphasis areas provide a foundation for graduate work in sociology.
• Students may select only ONE emphasis area.
• Juniors and seniors with a University GPA of 3.0 and higher may register for 500 level courses.

Select one of the following 400 level courses as a Capstone course:

Choose 24 credits based on the criteria below:

• Any course with a SOC prefix may be used to satisfy these 24 credits.
• Only 3 credits of SOC 422, or SOC 490, or SOC 491 or SOC 492 may be used to satisfy these elective credits.
• A maximum of four different variable title courses (SOC 295, SOC 302 and SOC 395) may be used for elective major credits.
• Students are encouraged to take courses within a concentration area.
• They are also encouraged to select one or more minors.
• Students may take all the 400 level courses if they wish; however, one of those courses must be taken in the same semester as SOC 480, the Social Issues Senior Project.

3. University-Wide Credits — 39 credits

Complete additional credits to achieve the minimum credits needed for this degree at UNC; for this degree, that will typically be 39 credits.
