ECLD 520 TESOL Approaches and Practicum

TESOL, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, encompasses many other acronyms—ESL, EFL, TEAL, CLD—dependent upon the context in which the English is taught. This course examines the methods debate on language instruction, advocates for an ‘eclectic’ method, and articulates key principles to guide an instructor’s approach to a language teaching methodology. Students examine task-based learning, the language domains (reading/writing/listening/speaking), pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, discourse, and assessment. The theories and ideas are applied in a required forty-hour practicum within the student’s chosen context upon agreement with a mentor/supervisor and in negotiation/reflection with the instructor of the course.
