MAS 260 Corridos: Music, Identity, Cultural Expressions, and Social Narratives in the Borderlands

Through an interdisciplinary approach, this course examines the roots, evolution, and impact of corridos through popular musical genres in Mexico and among Mexican American communities. The course explores how these musical narratives document lived experiences, serve as historical records, and reflect critical social, political, and cultural issues. Students will analyze the role of these genres in identity formation, cultural resistance, and collective memory while considering their influence on contemporary struggles and movements. Through comparative analysis of historical and socio-political contexts and cultural criticism, students will engage with these musical traditions as dynamic forms of storytelling that challenge dominant narratives and amplify marginalized voices.
