The 30 credit MAT in English reflects current trends and issues in research and instruction in English Language Arts (ELA). The degree program is designed to expand teachers’ knowledge of language, literature, and related fields preparing them to develop an English curriculum that meets the needs of all students. The course of study introduces new teaching skills, theories, and strategies. It also prepares teachers to engage in authentic classroom-based research. The program achieves these ends by offering a student-designed concentration or "cognate area" that allows teachers to tailor a program of study to meet their professional interests, needs, and goals. The program is offered for on-going open enrollment, and courses can be taken (and the program can be completed) on-line or on-site or in combination.
Degree Requirements — 30 Credits
Graduate Study Core — 9-12 credits
Students must complete at least one course in research methodology designated as appropriate to the discipline.

Required Capstone (3-6 credits)
All students are required to complete ENG 697 MA or Creative Project. Students can take ENG 697 for 3 or 6 credits depending on the nature of their project. Determined in consultation with their advisor.

Select two courses chosen from the following programs in consultation with your advisor:

- Educational Foundations (EDF)
- Literacy (ELIT) or Reading (EDRD)
- Special Education (EDSE)
- Educational Technology (ET)
Student Designed Cognate — 12 - 15 credits
Courses (12-15 SCH) selected by the student from the following programs and in consultation with an advisor. (Courses from other programs may be included with advisor approval.)

Students can take courses either on-line or on-site. Program completion includes the submission of a Capstone Project developed in consultation with an English Education advisor and approved by the English Education faculty.
