College of Osteopathic Medicine Catalog 2026-2027

Course Designations

All courses offered by the College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) carry the prefix OMED, which identifies them as part of the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) curriculum.

Course Numbering

Courses numbered 1000–4199 are designated exclusively for the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program and represent the professional-level curriculum. Enrollment in these courses requires authorization from the College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Only students formally enrolled in the UNC College of Osteopathic Medicine may register for OMED courses. Students outside the College of Osteopathic Medicine are not permitted to enroll in courses numbered 1000–4199.

University courses are sequentially numbered. Within the College of Osteopathic Medicine, numbering reflects progression through the curriculum:

  • OMED 1000–1999 – First-year (OMS I) coursework
  • OMED 2000–2999 – Second-year (OMS II) coursework
  • OMED 3000–3999 – Third-year (OMS III) clinical coursework
  • OMED 4000–4199 – Fourth-year (OMS IV) clinical coursework

Courses numbered 1000–4199 may be applied only toward the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree and may not be counted toward undergraduate, master’s or doctoral programs in other colleges of the University.

Variable and Experimental Courses

Courses with variable titles may include section-specific prerequisites as published in the Schedule of Classes.

Experimental College of Osteopathic Medicine courses may occasionally appear in the Schedule of Classes. These courses typically end in “98” (for example, OMED 3098) and are temporary offerings undergoing curricular review.

Curriculum Sweep and Purge

In accordance with institutional policy, courses that have not been taught within the previous six years are subject to the annual curriculum sweep and purge process. The College of Osteopathic Medicine must provide written justification to retain any course identified during this review. Courses without justification will be removed to maintain accuracy and transparency in the academic catalog.
