This course examines Central America—especially Guatemala, Nicaragua, and El Salvador—from the 16th century to the present. It covers the conquest of Maya peoples in the 1500s, the social consequences of colonial labor regimes, and the ways in which the different countries grappled with the colonial heritage and new paradigm as they struggled to forge modern nations. It will conclude with analyses of the crucial developments of recent years, such as dictatorships, phenomena of crime, and democratic potentials.
